Turn Your Audiobook into a Podcast
October 29, 2020
You worked hard to write your audiobook, why not share in multiple formats? Many authors are tapping into new audiences by turning their audiobook into a podcast. While this may seem like a daunting task, the process is fairly straightforward and has many benefits.
The Heavy Lifting is Done
If your book is in audio format, you’ve already done most of the hard work. The largest pieces for your podcast are done – content development and recording. While the heavy lifting is over, there are still important tasks to complete for your podcast to be successful. These include planning a content schedule, editing the audio, and promoting your pod. Repurposing your audiobook content for a podcast saves you the time and effort it would’ve taken to write new content. The chapters in your audiobook can easily be split into episodes and published according to your content plan.
To elevate your episodes, consider adding intros and outros, transitional music and other valuable content for your listeners. Valuable content could include insight on a specific chapter, inspiration for the book, or shameless plugs for your other projects.
Reach a Larger Audience
While you already have dedicated fans and customers of your books, podcasting is a great way to expand your reach and grow your audience. According to new research, 55% (155 million) of U.S. population have listened to a podcast and this number is growing every day. This means there is huge potential to reach new listeners and increase exposure to your work.
Pro tip: The most successful podcasts have clearly defined target audiences. If you haven’t already, take the time to define your audience. Check out our other tips to increase podcast subscribers.
Connect with Your Audience
With another avenue to reach your audience, you’ll also have more opportunities to interact with them. Ask listeners to share your podcast on social media and be open to their feedback. Subscribers love to know you listen to them, so make sure to share you appreciate their feedback in your episodes. Sharing audience feedback can also be part of the valuable content added to the end of your episodes.
Social media is also a great platform to connect with your listeners, promote your podcast, and give a glimpse into your life. Tell your social audience when new episodes drop and ask them what they thought of that chapter. You may be surprised with how much positive feedback (and great new ideas) you receive!
It’s also important to engage with your followers by liking or commenting on posts related to your podcast. There are countless social media platforms, but many podcasters get great engagement on Instagram. Review our blog on using Instagram to promote your podcast for more tips!
